·         Rosslyn Slug Line - As traffic and commuter congestion worsens along the 1800 block of N. Moore St. in front of the Rosslyn Metro Station, so has the scrutiny of the slug line that supports hundreds of local commuters.   On February 22nd I received an email stating that on February 21st the Arlington Police Department passed out the following notice to slugs:

"ATTENTION SLUG LINE USER'S"
Beginning March 2002 the Arlington County Police will begin strict enforcement of traffic violations in the 1700-1800 block of N. Moore St. in front of the Rosslyn Metro Station. Vehicles will be ticketed or drivers cited for the following:

  • Vehicles in the no parking zones to include vehicles that are standing/idling

  •  Vehicles that are blocking travel lanes

  •  Vehicles not yielding to pedestrians

  •  Vehicles making illegal U-turns

In an effort to avoid citations it is suggested that the slug line be moved to a less congested area. Your help in this matter is appreciated.

I have contacted the Arlington County Police Department and have asked for their assistance in resolving the congestion problems.  The traffic problems along N. Moore Street are not purely slug induced and I am confident the department is taking a holistic approach by addressing all alternatives.  It should be mentioned that

Arlington County and their commuter assistance program has been a very active supporter of slugging!

Regardless to the outcome of the Arlington Police Department, there are some suggestions from within the slugging community to improve the Rosslyn line:
  • Create two separate lines for Rosslyn: one for “Stafford” and another for “all other”
  • Head Slug walks the line of cars and calls out destinations instead of allowing the drivers to stack up.

Another newsletter will be distributed as this issues gets resolved.
