Has anyone brought the idea of a toll road that parallels (like Route 1) I-95 in the west to government officials? The main reason why I-95 is so congested is because you not only have commuter traffic using the road, but a lot of out of state travelers use the road as well. The toll road could be used a bypass for travelers and potential HOT lane users, and could connect at similar points as I-95, while keeping the current HOV on I-95 and relieving traffic the congested Interstate.

The road could be built by a private company like the Dulles Greenway. I think Southern California also has a similar system of toll roads that parallel I-5 corridor.

There has been talk (off and on) for several years of both eastern and western bypasses to alleviate congestion on I95. Don't know whether tolls are an option, but I haven't heard any discussion of this issue for a few years now.

Not feasible: the cost of acquiring land is prohibitive. A new road would have to sit within the existing dimensions of the current I-95 footprint. That is what Fluor is proposing.

Anyone out there old enough to remember the toll road sections of I-95 between Petersburg and Richmond? [V]

Now there was a pain in the rump! [:p]

We don't need any more tolls on the heavily traveled I-95/395 roadways - HOV or regular lanes. [B)]

Keep on sluggin'! [:)]

I can remember the toll road and you are right it was a real pain in the ...... But wasn't the traffic issue also the reason that VDOT built 295 around the Richmond and Petersburg area......

While we're dreaming .... let's build it west of I-95 and east of US29 from some point joining I-95 in north of DC in Maryland to the western I-95/64 beltway around Richmond. [^]

sluDge - if we're going to dream, how about building up instead of out? Yes, multi-level roads. We can start with Richmond to Baltimore being the 2nd tier. 3rd tier would be Richmond to Philly, 4th Richmond to NY. No exits except the final destination...

Dreaming? No, hallucinating...

Seriously though, is there a way to get "thru-traffic" through without impeding them and without clogging roads for local traffic? Suggestions other than by-passes? A new coastal highway that bypasses the cities? Mega-beltways?

It's been my pet theory for a couple of years that "they" plan to extend Rte. 234 east to a bridge over the Potomac and up around DC to I95. Consider that VDOT plans for a fly-over interchange at 234 and Rte. 1. Hmm, how many fly-over interchanges are there on Rte. 1? I95N traffic will be able to exit onto 234E and speed over the bridge to Maryland and points north.

Second, and a dead giveaway it is, the name of the subdivision through which this road will pass is... SouthBRIDGE. Now you know why it's called that!

I was arguing with someone today about those toll roads. He said the tolls were only closed about 2 years ago. I maintain it's been 10 or 15 years since they had tolls between Petersburg and Richmond. What year were they closed?
