Two educators from the University of Maryland are seeking to interview Slugs as part of a research paper on slugging. Although they would like to interview those who have slugged for many years, they are also interested in new slugs.

More information will be provided on how to contact them.

I had a wonderful interview with the educators from the University of Maryland and I would encourage slugs to participate in their research. Below is what they sent in regards to their project and contact information:

We are researchers at the University of Maryland and we are currently
conducting a study on the phenomena of slugging. We are interested in
conducting 8-10 interviews with both slugs and drivers over the next
month. In particular, we would like to interview both long-time and
relatively new participants to slugging.

Our preliminary study focuses on the emergence and perpetuation of
slugging. Questions that we are interested exploring include: your
motivations for slugging, how you learned about slugging, how you
learned the etiquette of slugging, how often you see familiar faces
while slugging, and whether you developed relationships with other
slugs.

The study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at the
University of Maryland and we will take every precaution to ensure the
confidentiality of your identity. Further, the information you provide
will be anonymous and confidential.

If you would like to participate in the study, please contact us (301)
405-9746 or by email at jmote@socy.umd.edu or ykurashina@socy.umd.edu.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

What a wonderful lunch my husband and I had with Ms. Kurashina. We discussed many facets of slugging. Thanks!

We wanted to extend our deep appreciation to all of those who have contacted us regarding interviews. We currently have a full slate of interviews, so we are not currently seeking additional ones. We are hopeful that this will turn into a larger study down the road, and we will post an additional request for interviews at that time (particularly for long-time slugs and drivers).

We will be presenting the results of this initial study at the 2005 annual meeting of the American Sociological Association in a couple of weeks, and soon after we will try to put our report somewhere up on the web so that the slug community can access it. Thanks again and keep slugging!
