Using stuff to secure place in line?

This is the Basic Question: Is it appropriate to use your stuff to secure your place in line while waiting nearby in your vehicle? To be more specific, the question posed is, is it appropriate to come to a slug line, leave a bag or some personal item on the ground to maintain your place/position in line, and then wait nearby seated inside a car.

Like everything else, I think it depends on the situation. If somebody has to run back to their car to grab their Blackberry or umbrella or something like that then I think it's OK for a short-term placeholder.

I might also consider honoring the use of a life-sized cardboard cutout to hold one's place in line. [:o)]

The DMV located on Caton Hill Road opens at 8am on Saturday mornings. On any given Saturday, one can expect a sizable queue in front of that building in the run up to 8am. If you were to arrive early, place a bag at the front door, and return to your vehicle to wait, I can only imagine the reaction you would encounter were you to return to it with a person or two present in hopes of reclaiming your position in the queue. It's safe to say you would likely receive some fairly passionate arguments against allowing your positional return.

While there may be concern arriving very early at the lot before drivers arrive, remember the old saying - there is safety in numbers. Standing in line is a good and safe way for slugs to look out for each other.
