I don't mind if people speed a bit as long as they have a wide open road (which he did) and they don't jump in and out of lanes and tailgate but it wasn't my place to tell him to drive the speed limit, because it is not the passenger's place to tell the driver what to do. Like I said before, if you don't like the way a driver drives, smells, or even looks[;)], then you have the CHOICE to not ride with them and if they are really trouble, post their license plate number and vehicle description on the "DO NOT RIDE WITH" forum on here. I know I will not ride with this person again, unless I want to be late for work!!

I guess I need to drive that stretch of road. When did they convert I395 to 65MPH? I thought the limit dropped to 55 around Newington. Has Virginia thrown away the Federal guidelines regarding speed limits in metropolitan areas? If they can raise the limit on I395 to 65, why don't they do it on the Beltway? People generally do 70 MPH as it is.

Ronin,

SSSSHHHHH - it's a slugging group decided speed limit, we just haven't told VDOT yet. No need for them to know (wink, wink).

Cheers,

Learn something new every ....

I395 actually has been converted to 65mph (for HOVers that is). It's 50 in the construction zone, not that its observed much, but after that, bring it.

Cheers,

As glacier said, I-395 is 65 MPH on the HOV lanes (other than through the construction), whereas the regular lanes of I-395 are still 55 MPH.

That's why even on the weekends I'll usually hop on the HOV lanes so I can do 70 MPH and only be 5 MPH over the speed limit, instead of 15 ;0)

Same here. Great to have the option, although I had to go all the way to the puzzle palace and turn around when I found I could not exit off the HOV near edsal.

Cheers,

Same here Zevida. That's why I prefer to jump on the HOV lanes on weekends too. I set the cruise control at 70mph and enjoy the ride.

I think ronin and glacier missed the whole point of this post. The initial post was about driver's vs. riders rights and slug etiquette. I was simply making a point as to the fact that as a rider, if I don't like the way someone drives, etc., then I have the CHOICE to not ride with them and that a rider shouldn't tell the driver what to do while in their car.

As for the point that it only gets you there a very slight amount faster, you didn't take into consideration that if you don't pass Springfield by the time HOV opens, then you sit in a traffic back-up, this in turn makes your trip a whole lot longer than your equation states. It also doesn't account for the people who need to pick up children at their day care that get charged for every minute that their children are late being picked up. I expect the driver to at least travel the speed limit (which is 65 mph on almost the entire HOV) and if they do not, then I reserve the right to not ride with them again.

SBUDDY,

Your point was not lost on me at all. I totally agree with your position that slugs can refuse to drive with whom ever they chose. I was merely pointing out that 5mph is, to me, a small reason to go out of ones way to put a driver on a no-ride list. As for "you didn't take into consideration that if you don't pass Springfield by the time HOV opens, then you sit in a traffic back-up, this in turn makes your trip a whole lot longer than your equation states. It also doesn't account for the people who need to pick up children at their day care that get charged for every minute that their children are late being picked up." I don't see how a 5mph saves one from the consequences you list. You could lose 2.5 minutes just standing in a long slug line. If you want to ensure that you will ALWAYS be on time to avoid child care costs, just get to the slug line 5 minutes earlier. That seems easier that worrying if EVERY driver you ride with will adhere to your expected speed requirements. Because, you're likely to be disappointed time and again. However, if you drive with me, no worries, I average about 70-75mph.

Cheers,

Glacier

The point remains, it's the riders CHOICE to not take a ride from someone regardless of why. It still is a personal CHOICE...

Being that I made that point in my prior post - "I totally agree with your position that slugs can refuse to drive with whom ever they chose." - I'm glad we totally agree.

Cheers,
