This morning WJLA news reporter Kevin Tschida did a story on HOV cheating and one person he interviewed was a VA State Trooper who recommended that to get greater enforcement, we should write our local, State and Federal delegates for increased funding for HOV enforcement.
I for one will submit a question to Govenor Warner on the next "Ask the Governor" program on WTOP asking him to ride with me one morning as one of my slugs so that he can experience first hand what we go through everyday. I know there is not a chance in Hell he would do it, but I think he and all the other legislators in Virginia should ride in the HOV without their police escorts clearing the way with lights and sirens and count the violators and see for themselves the pathetic enforcement we see (or should I say don't see). So write your delegates and ask, plead, cajole them to increase the funding for HOV enforcement because without it, we will be reaching a breaking point. I would hate to see the day when someone will "go postal" and there will be a road rage incident. 'Nuff said. John |

What is the specific time of day that you see so many cheaters on 95? Just curious because from 7:15 to 8 there are not many chaeaters, just a lot of "exempt" singles. (my opinion)
I believe 90 percent of the cheating is from 6 to 6:30. Admittedly, that reverberates throughout the commute and affects the entire rush hour. Unfortunately, the cheats know that if they all cheat together it is really impossible to enforce. They aren't dumb. Bob |

Bob.....I think your right about the time frame for violations. I try to get on at 6:30 and its still backed up from all the people crashing the gate. People still dont realize that they have to be off the HOV by 6:00 am or face a fine. Many believe if they enter by 6 they are ok.

On the ride to work last Friday, I saw 7 cheaters. Two were regular cheaters, and five were one occupant hybrids without the required plates. I've only seen one hybrid ever pulled over in the HOV lanes.. hmm.

quote:Perhaps on solution could be to move HOV ONLY time back about 1/2 hour so in the morning HOV would be in effect at 5:30 AM and in the evening at 3:00 pm.[:)] |

I very rarely see cheaters from Springfield to DC at 7:10am in the morning.

My current theory is that the mountain of cheaters (and everyone else) that gets on between 6 and 6:30 creates a jam at the 14th st bridge around 6:30 or so. This jam then reverberates for the next hour and what I call the "residual" backup gloms up traffic around Landmark. Within a mile of the Pentagon, traffic opens up to 60 miles per hour. There is no other explanation for this consistent pattern.
So we have the cheater load that comes in early, and as someone posted on another thread, many good HOV cars are also getting on early, largely due to parking constraints. Result GRIDLOCK! |

Has anyone noticed that all of a sudden the media is so interested with HOV/Slugging/HOT?? There was a Fox5 blurb last week on Hybrids vs. HOV ending with some Hybrid driver saying he doesn't see a congestion problem and the harm with Hybrids using the HOV. Now this producer from Fox is looking to do a story on slugging.
