The Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance (NVTA) released a survery 17 Dec 04 which concluded that commuters driving alone continue to increase as commuting conditions deteriorate

A survey of 7200 area workers by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments finds that more workers are choosing to drive alone to work than three years ago and that nearly 30% of commuters say their travel conditions have gotten worse in the last year.

Key results of this survey conducted between February 7 and May 2, 2004 include:

74.1% of work tips made outside the home are by solo drivers – up from 72.6% in 2001.

Train use increased from 12.7% to 12.8% during this period while bus use dropped from 4.7% to 4.6% and bike/walk trips declined from 2.4% to 2.3% of weekly commute trips.

Carpool/vanpool trips also dropped significantly from 7.6% to 6.1%.

Nearly 30% of commuters said their trip had become more difficult in just the past year.

Of these 81% said the main reason was more congestion – (Imagine that?)

And while trends towards increased auto use continue and percentages of those using alternative modes decline, many elected officials continue to insist that “more pavement” isn’t the answer.”

According to this survey, for about 85% of commuters (solo drivers, carpoolers, bus riders) it is.

Coincidentally, carpooling has become a much less attractive method of commuting in the last two years. It's not too bad yet, but it's much worse than two years ago.

Wondering where slugging stands with those statistics? They can't or won't measure the increase in slugging (note that it's a leading question where I'm assuming an increase)?
