Please, please, please, when you clean the snow off your car, also ALWAYS clean the top off. Not doing so (and MANY people, for some reason, leave a layer of snow on the roof of their car) is simply incredibly dangerous. Be considerate.
It's insane that people have to be told this EVERY YEAR.

Indeed! Please keep in mind that someone's wiper fluid line may be frozen and when you spew your dirty snow on their windsheild they will become blinded! urg.

Not cleaning snow off vehicles is just another example of typical Northern Va driver laziness. We saw an old Honda Accord on 395 HOV this morning with snow cleaned off the windshield only. The guy couldn't see bupkus out his side or rear windows -- and his hood, roof, and trunk were all snow-covered. But he was doing 65-70 mph anyway, apparently alone, violating HOV at 6:40 this morning. [:(]

The problem is: short people buy tall cars (SUVs) and they cannot reach the roof to clean them off. As was witnessed this morning by a smallish person in a black SUV ripping down the HOV on-ramp at 123 blowing chunks all the way. They veered in front of me and created a white out until the top cleared off. Shame, shame, shame!

Short people who buy tall vehicles should also buy stepladders.
Not quite as drastic as Randy Newman's lyrics "Short People Got No Reason to Live". [8D]

Short people buy tall cars?? Oh boy....Anyway, what do I do since I own a pickup truck and the back is filled with snow? Shovel it all out?

I saw a school bus in the regular lanes with the top all covered by snow this morning around 7:40am. It caught my attention because it was spitting snow to every single car behind it, including the cars to the far left lane.

Not limited to NoVa -- have seen the same deal in every state/country I have lived in or deployed to where there was snow, even those wherein summer is but a fleeting thought and one would think those denizens should know better.

I would like to take a moment to point out that for those of us who are Vertically Challenged, any vehicle roof is difficult to reach! [:(!]

However, for those of you who like to make fun of the "short folks", just remember when you are standing out in the line freezing and a car/truck pulls up that is just a little too cozy for you, I will fit in just fine. Not only will I be warm but I will also be halfway home before you realize maybe it's not so bad being petite. [;)]

Anyone who has watched the news or knows anything about winterizing your car, the first rule of thumb is to always make sure you keep the windshield washer fluid topped off and keep a jug in your car at all times. kgirl- This may come as a shock, but, they actually sell the kind that does not freeze up. [:0]

I agree that the only way for everyone to be safe is to be considerate of others. However, when you start making rediculous accusations, you are bound to get a swift kick in the rear! Have a great day. [:)]

I can't believe that you are actually saying that short people shouldn't buy SUV or I guess mini-van's for that matter. What kind of statement is that? I saw plenty of compact cars with snow on the roof yesterday also.

Moody Girl, I think the real intent of the thread is that EVERYONE should clear off their ENTIRE car. Doesn't matter if you are tall or short. Doesn't matter if you drive an SUV or a compact car. Not doing so causes a very dangerous situation for the cars behind.

You make a good point about making sure you have plenty of washer fluid that won't freeze in the line. However, sometimes its not a lack of washer fluid that causes the problem. A couple of weeks ago I was driving back from PA. Road slush built up on my hood around the area where the fluid comes out clogging everything up. So the fluid was useless until I pulled over and cleared the hood. People who do not clean all the snow off of their cars can cause the same problems for the people behind them.

moody:
my fluid LINE froze and the windshield wipers busted off in my attempt to get home from Philly Sat. My car is a junker which is why I slug - ride, but I DO have to get myself to the lot.
I think you are little too sensitive about the short thing. Get a broom to get the top.

Goodness gracious...LOL. That's like having those little three inch wipers for your headlights. Pretty soon we'll have car features available that "do your dishes for you" or "read you a story and tuck you into bed a night."

[?] Do they actually work that well??

Ooh! Ooh! I want those! Heated nozzles!

Imagine what a Sponge could do with heated nozzles!

Actually, I recently rode in an Audi with heated seats on a very cold day. Bliss... bliss....

My next car is coming with heated mirrors, heated seats, heated steering wheel, and now, heated nozzles. [8D]

How cool.

Hey Sponge,

To get all those heated options, looks like you'll be spending something on the order of $40-50K at least! Is a Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Acura, Infiniti, Audi, Cadillac, Lincoln, etc. in your future?
Looks like your future's so bright you'll have to wear shades! [8D]
Keep on sluggin'! [:)]

Well, no, I'm made of spongey material, not money, so Beemers and Lexi are not in the picture. [:(]

I may jury-rig heated nozzles by drilling holes in my hood. But I'd give my (detachable) right arm for heated seats!

As for the future... the sky is falling! Fight the Toll Roads!

Sponge,

You can get the heated seats and side mirrors in a VW Passat (cold weather package), and probably in the Jetta as well. And I got my 2001.5 for less than $25k. You could probably get a used one for a lot less now. The biggest issue I have is that it takes a long time for the interior to warm up. The seat warms up quickly, but it's about 15 minutes into the drive before you actually notice that the rest of the interior is warm .

You can take care of the steering wheel by adding a cover, so you don't need a heater there. The fluid nozzles, now that's another matter.

These mornings, my slugs are quite comfortable (I only need 1 for Toll Road). I make sure I turn on the heater before I get to the lot.

Well, I've never had an instance when I couldn't use the washers so I guess they work that well. I actually have high pressure sprayers for my headlights. I wouldn't trust the little headlight wipers. They seem like they'd break and cost a fortune to fix. In Europe if you have HID lights they require some type of headlight cleaning system to prevent glare. Smart idea if you ask me.

You don't need a luxury car for the heated washer nozzles. VW has a cold weather package for most models and it includes heated seats, heated washer nozzles, and heated mirrors. The option is not that much(~$300 I think in the Jetta). Not sure what affordable car offers a heated steering wheel.
Warming: Once you have a car with heated seats you will no longer buy one without them. It's one of those things that there is no going back from. If you own any other cars you will also start to dislike them since they lack the heated seats.

Whether someone is short is no excuse for not cleaning off the top of the vehicle. There are various devices on the market to address this sort of thing. Google "SnoBrum" to find one example.

You can get heated mirrors and heated seats for $33,000 if you buy an Acura TL, but no heated steering wheel or nozzles. I got a TL last summer and I LOVE those heated seats! (Never used the heated mirrors because I have a garage at home and I park in it.)

I'v always melted the snow. I just turn up the heat in my Taurus. By the time I get to work, the snow is gone.

Ha Defender. You are funny. Thanks for sharing your wit.

As for me, I've decided heated nozzles, seats, and mirrors for our next car, but only after the current minivan dies a natural death.

In the meantime, I'm going to soak in hot water each morning. This is a favorite tactic of we sponges.

I'm also going to patent a heated steering wheel cover with an elastic cord running to the cigarette lighter.

I leave the snow on the top, well, I even go to the extreme of loading more snow on the top of my car after it snows and drive really fast down 395 to keep you tailgaters off my rear. It works...Man, I wish it snowed more often.

Remember, work harder...millions on welfare are counting on you...so back to work slackers.
