Last Friday afternoon the car in which I was riding ran out of gas in the HOV lanes. As luck would have it, we ended up near one of the exits in Springfield. I decided to leave the knuckle-head behind and walk up the ramp to arrange for another ride home. I'd like to know what other people have done in this situation?

There was a thread that Some guy (can't remember his name Bobbin something...) that was riding in a car and it ran out of gas, he ended up pushing the car for the guy to a gas station. The funny (or made up part) was that the driver had no money to pay for the gas.
What was YOUR drivers reaction when you walked away?[:p]

What's the deal with running out of gas? I mean do the drivers just get in the car and not check the gas gauge hoping that some majic fairy is going to put gas in their tank?
This seems to be happening a lot lately.

Must be the poor wages and the high price of gasoline. [:p]

I was in a van that ran out of gas on a Friday afternoon. We rolled to a stop in the HOV lanes near the Duke St exit. Traffic was heavy in both HOV and main lanes, so leaving wasn't an option.

The driver called his brother, who lived in Woodbridge, to bring us some gas. So we waited about an hour for this guy to show up.

A state trooper noticed us and pulled up behind with his emergency lights on to alert traffic that we were "broken down." When the brother showed up with the gas, the trooper ran across the lanes (the brother was in the northbound lanes) to get the gas can.

He's the one who actually poured the gas into the tank - the driver was somehow unable to. The trooper went above and beyond - kudos.

I haven't seen the driver since.

So, if this were me (stranded as a rider) what's the options for having someone in the HOV's pick me up along side of the road? Should I just hold up my 610 sign and hope that a nice slug-driver stops? Sure would be a nice thing to do.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA [:D]OH MAN! You are too much luvmyhybrid. I can see that happening. I don't know if a driver would pick you up but maybe a state trooper thinking you were insane.

Yeah I saw that van DC2RV. The guy pulled up with the gas can, the cop ran his plate and found out the car that pulled up with the gas can had outstanding warrants and tried to question the guy. The guy threw the gas can out the window and took off. The cop, not wanting a car hitting the gas can and causing a fire ball, ran out into traffic to fetch the can.
The cop then poured the gas into the carberator and gas tank, then took off in his cruiser after the perp.
I saw it on the news.

Here's that thread from "babblin B" : (its hilarious)
Why wouldn't you fill up your tank before you pick slugs up for work? Today I had to help push my drivers car. I was unhappy and still am. My boss was mad when I showed up with lollipop on my pants, today I show up covered in sweat and with tatters in my clothes! I even lost a shoe string! I had to push his car three miles to a gas station. Then he asked me for gas money. I might get fired if this happens again. What do you do with an irresponsible drivers?

The Trooper was great - serving and protecting per the motto.

I did feel bad for the person in the backseat of the van though - she asked if the driver could take a third. And he did.

Bet the third person was like " why did I have to ask?"

While that's funny to you, there's been times where I've seen car's broken down with people standing along the guardrail...my guess is they're sluggers just trying to get to work/home. What a "random act of kindness" if a "slug-driver" would take the time to stop and give them a ride to the nearest commuter lot.

Uh-huh.

Any way...why wouldn't someone stop for the broken down slugs? Maybe the car was already full. I tend to chose a newer car to ride in. I'm not about to get into (unless I absolutely have to) a car that is puffing smoke from the exhaust, no seatbelts, or broken or no windows. Clear signs of a good chance at a break-down.
Although newer cars can break down just as easily. So it's just a chance to take.
But ultimately the driver should make sure they are well off on the gas situation BEFORE picking anyone up.

Hey Luvmyhybrid- would you or have you ever stopped to pick anyone up that is stranded? That would be the good thing to do as a Hybrid driver in the HOV lanes, considering you probably have an empty car, and us "regular" drivers who abide by the HOV3 requirement have full cars.

What's the deal with stuffed Bras? I mean isn't that false advertisement? And what's the deal with gold stars?

Last summer I made the mistake of getting into an older car that sounded bad - red flag, but it was going all the way to 14th and L Sts. so it was hard to pass up from Horner Rd. lot. As we progressed (me in the back seat) the young female was driving like a bat-out-of-Hell to the point where I was very uncomfortable. Finally said something to her about slowing down and the next thing I know, we are. Good - I'll live to see retirement.

This was NOT a good sign. I kept looking at the speedometer and we were now going 40 mph, now 30, now 20, now we were becoming road hazard. I quickly asked what was going on and she said the engine had died. I'm telling her NOT to stop on the road but pull off - NOW!!

We were just before the Springfield exit and after about 10 minutes a VDOT guy shows up. He tries to jump-start her but her battery was shot and later he told me that her engine was shot, too, but he didn't have the heart to tell her.

After over 10 years of slugging this is the second time that an old car died on me. Last time I was leaving the Pentagon and 3 of us ladies merely walked the distance back to the slugline after unsucessfully trying to hitchhike. All of the cars already had 3 in and wouldn't stop. It was very hot and we had already been in the slugline for 20 minutes. We had to get in the back of the line again.

This time I asked the VDOT guy to take me and another guy to the Metro and he said he could only do one at a time so he called another guy to come for him. He also called a wrecker for her and her POS. I also noticed that her gas gage was pretty low after we got on the road so eventually that would have become an issue. What is with these people??? The other slug told me when we were out of the car that he was scared and was glad that I spoke up about the speeding.

By the way neither one of us felt bad for "leaving" her by herself. I got to work two hours late - and no, I was not docked for leave and have never been docked. A fellow co-worker slugger came in almost 3 hours late just this week and was not docked leave.

Agree. I am very thankful for the drivers, and I hate to be a picky chooser. BUT- there are sometimes when you shouldn't be driving especially if you know or "aren't sure" if the condition of your car isn't up "to speed".

One time I rode in a clunker type car and the tire went flat, then the car started over heating. While we all stood in the freezing cold snow, the head light fell off and we basically just duck taped the car back together. Two hours later we were on our way and very late for work
