How bout a topic for vehicles that we all "DO" like to ride in? I know I had a great ride this morning. Kudo's to Travis and his hospitality. Radio playing songs that smooth the soul, Air Conditioning on and vents blowing properly keeping everyone cool, he started up a nice conversation about his upcoming attache duties in a foreign country (good luck to you by the way) but didn't go on and on about it and ask all the SLUGs what they did (and took 3), just nice, pleasant conversation. Also, the vehicle was nice and the seats were very comfortable. Sounded like he was leaving soon so he may not be available and, stupid me, I forgot to get his plate information when I got out (I'm not the most alert person in the world in the AM). He went above and beyond in all categories when it comes to providing for SLUGs. I don't expect much except a little air and common courtesy of other SLUGs and drivers (mutual respect), okay, maybe that's a lot sometimes. You have to admit though, the amount of good drivers and good SLUGs far outweigh the negative and bad drivers/SLUGs. Great system we have in place and great form of alternative transportation. I've rode, driven, VRE'd, and Bus'd during my 2 years here and grateful to have all means available to me.

Sorry, forgot to include the pick-up/drop-off point. This was from Gordon/Rt 3 to Pentagon this morning :)

Hey AZ Man, great idea! We need a "Slugger's Hall of Fame!" I can offer several regulars, both drivers and riders, worthy of inclusion.
Drivers:
-the guy in the dark blue Infinity with the great music and BBQ tips,
-the guy in the gray SUV who always picks me up,
-the friendly woman with the red SUV who always fits one more person,
-and many, many other smiling faces of those who drive each day. Thank you!
Riders:
-All the sleepy-heads at Bob's and Sydenstricker in the morning who force a smile and a "Good Morning,"
-All the great PM riders in the L'Enfant line who smile and joke at the end of their long, busy days.

This is what makes slugging so cool! Yea, it's great for a bunch of logical reasons too, but the people we meet each day really makes it worthwhile!

Can't forget the guy who blasts the political talk radio station that barely comes in clearly in the PM,

"The Democrats are evil, the terrorists are coming for us!!!"

Thanks, I love feeling uncomfortable at the end of a hard day...

Oh wait, this is the "do" ride with list...oops...

GMHP, you should ask him to refund the cost of your ride -- or you could simply wait for a better ride to maintain your high principles.

Did I freak on the driver and tell him that I found his radio station offensive and uncomfortable, that the static and loud decible was giving me a headache? No, I sat quietly the entire ride, and said thank you when I got out. I came here and made light of it instead.

Oosik, you should learn to not take things so literally, and not dig on people when they are trying to make light of a conversation.

I have the rite to express MY opinion that politics and religion should be left OUTSIDE the car.

The Dems are evil terrorists? I thought that was the Republicans (except those mentioned in my previous post here)!

GMHP, I hear ya, I rode one time with a guy that had a sermon blasting, didn't bother me a bit because I was in a car heading South, A/C was cranked, and comfortable seat, 2 out of 3 ain't bad :). I think the sermon was about Democrats being evil and Republican's going to heaven but not sure (grin).

The Sponge wants to give a shout out to the PM drivers in the west end of town who carry his square yellow behind home most every day: I've never had a bad ride in years, and happily try to return the favor when I drive in myself.

99% of the drivers I encounter are just great, and so are 99% of the riders. With all our cavilling and sniping on this board, AZMan is wise to ask us to consider all to whom we owe our gratitude.

Now, back to my usual grumpy doom forecasting.

I've never had a really bad time on either side. I do want to say thanks to the guy I picked up at the Pentagon who shared his crossword puzzle with me. We had a nice and amazingly quick ride home on a Friday because of the conversation and back and forth with the puzzle. I have a new like for Coasties.[;)]

Shout out to the nice lady from the Air Force who went out of her way to drop me off near the Daventry slug line drop off even though she was heading to Syden!! Wow, Daventry doesn't get much action during the PM, huh? Had to result to parking at Syden only cus the lines go much much faster to Syden. Daventry, average wait time....5 hours. Syden, every 30 seconds. :)

Props to the nice lady who took a co-worker and myself to Crystal City even though she was heading to the Pgon, then got lost and stuck in an underground parking garage, so early in the morn'. That was funny!

After slugging for many years, I now have to drive in and pick up slugs myself. Wanted to know how I can make the "do ride" list. Some of the annoying slugs I was forced to stand in line with day in and day out, I now pick up myself.

There have been plenty of days when I have wanted to tell the "annoying slugs" not to get in my car....but I've never have the nerve. I don't discriminate and take them anyways....even when I know I may be subjecting myself to 45 minutes of misery...depending on the traffic, this torture could possibly last over an hour...

Does taking slugs who drive you to the point of craziness qualify me for the "do ride" list? If I'm on the "do ride" list, then maybe it will minimize my chances of getting the same annoying slugs, if people start fighting for a chance to ride with me.

Tell me where to send my application...I would love the opportunity to get on this prestigious list.

Also...if we're going to go out of our way to have "do ride" and "do not ride" lists...it would only be fair to have the "do pick up" and "do not pick up" slug lists. We could give descriptions, along with other identifying characteristics, such as name, where they work, hair color, body type, married/not married, etc. Also, we could list why they are on the list. For example, cell phone attached to their ear, body odor, won't shut up, etc., etc., etc.

And to the woman who I have had the (unfortunate) opportunity to both slug with and drive...you really should leave the suitcase of make up at home and think about getting up a couple of minutes earlier. When I slugged with you, I was embarassed as you made yourself at home in a stranger's car and started decorating yourself with your suitcase of make up. The perfume and body lotion you insist on putting on just about knocked us out. Thought it was a one-time thing. But then I picked you up one morning. I won't be surprised if I see you carrrying your clothes next time, and changing on the way in...

sluggie,

Send your application to the "do ride" list to me. Only thing I ask is to be picked up out of line so I can make a "fair" and "accurate" assessment of you as a driver while I review your application (at least for the amount of time I'm actually awake enough to review it).

I've gotta agree on the good/bad slugs that are out there. When I drove, I had mostly good slugs. Now that I'm slugging, I'm getting to see a wider array of slugs out there...some just don't take the idea that, although this is a mutually beneficial event, that the ones getting the ride should treat others BETTER than they'd want to be treated themselves (no matter how they're being treated too).

The Ideal Driver:

Asks immediately where you want to get off -- no surprises for anyone!

Sets thermostat to a moderate temperature and tells you to turn away the outlets if you want.

Has a quiet radio station or CD playing.

Does not have piles of trash on seat or floor.

Drives carefully with no cellphone use.

Wears a seatbelt and insists all riders buckle up.

Always drops the slug at a curb, not in the middle of the street.

Allows short quiet cell calls by slugs as necessary.

Has enough gas to make the trip, even with back-ups.

Hey, what could be easier?

sluggie, you need to be nominated to the "do ride" list, however based on your willingness to drive us appreciative slugs back and forth, your self-nomination is accepted. Kudos!

Also feel free to begin a thread to recognize the slug riders you feel are worthy of mention for whatever reason.

As a new driver, I appreciate the advice, but I just GOTTA know, does National Public Radio qualify as a quiet radio station?

Welcome Galah, NPR is OK in my book; I think volume is the issue.

I rode with a gentleman yesterday that had NPR on. Not my thing, but it was fine, and as raymond mentioned, the volume was set at a comfortable level.

Is that the station like TOP that usually comes in with that science-fiction sounding static in the backround?? I dont mind news channels, I'm not a fan of the wizzing and crackling of static in the backround.

Do ride with "Texas Native" truck. He goes to both the Horner Road and Hechingers Lots (as do I and have seen him at both). No complaints about this guy at all, and more than that I left my digital camera in his truck in the morning and managed to catch him at night and got the camera back!

Do ride with:

High fives to the Isuzu Rodeo driver with the front bench seat this morning who, after waiting in the rain for a second rider, was willing to add a third last minute (a fellow slug who was last in line that I knew was going our way). Great effort!

Now THAT is what makes this work; fellowship and lookin' out for each other!

Kudos go to the driver who called out 18 and K this morning but told me and another rider along the way that he was turning right on K and going to 17th and did not mind if we rode to 17 and K. This put me closer to the metro (my destination) and avoided me having to deal with the rain. Thank you!
