This might affect people who slug to/from the Lorton VRE area:

Dr. Gridlock of the Washington Post reports that sometime in the next few weeks, the southbound slip ramp from the I-95 HOV to the general-purpose lanes that is marked with the sign "Lorton" and located just south of the Fairfax County Parkway interchange in Newington is to close PERMANENTLY. If you want to get to Lorton from the HOV you'll now have to use the flyover ramp back in Springfield.

quote:
At the beginning of October, the ramp from the I-95 southbound high-occupancy vehicle lanes to the regular lanes south of the Fairfax County Parkway will close permanently. The Virginia Department of Transportation said this is being done to create room for construction of an additional travel lane for the 95 Express Lanes, the high-occupancy toll lanes project

That description is a bit misleading. The real reason they need to close it is to make room for a new northbound HOV exit/southbound HOV entrance that will connect the reversible carriageway to the existing traffic light at the intersection of Boudinot Drive and Alban Road (meaning in the morning you will be able to exit the express lanes and go to Newington or onto the Fairfax County Parkway via the Boudinot Drive ramp). The new ramp's footprint will be located precisely where the southbound slip ramp is now. See map at the following link: http://www.vahotlanes.com/documents/D38683PH_10.pdf - http://www.vahotlanes.com/documents/D38683PH_10.pdf

The northbound HOV slip ramp ENTRANCE is to remain unaffected.
