This forum is to raise awareness of the slugs commuting between 234 and Rosslyn and also to discuss the creation of a afternoon/evening slug line in Rosslyn to 234.
Recently the 234 commuter lot slug lines have been broken down by location. Rosslyn hasn't been an official destination point but every now and again you got lucky. Now there are seperate lines, one of which is for Rosslyn. The line and drivers are skimp now but I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes so far. I am hoping the wait time, among other things, will change once commuters are aware that there is slugging to Rosslyn from 234. Gone are the days when you had to slug to the Pentagon and metro to Rosslyn! The Rosslyn slug line is the fourth line from the bus area. You will see Pentagon, then DC, then Crystal City, before reaching the Rosslyn line.
There is one major glitch in the 234/Rosslyn commute. How do we get home?! I am hoping you, my fellow commuters, can help remedy this. I dread having to metro from Rosslyn to the Pentagon in the evening to return to the 234 commuter lot. The heat, the trek down to the slug lines from the metro, the crowd... Who's with me! Why not have a direct method from Rosslyn to 234? Just like any other slug line couplet. We need to set up a slug line in Rosslyn to 234 for in the evenings. As of now there are slug-lines to the following places: (According to Slug-Lines.com)
Service Road Line: Potomac Mills Horner Road Tackett's Mill Stafford 610 Route 3 - Gordon Road (Fredericksburg)
North Kent Street Line: Rolling Valley Sydenstricker Daventry Cardinal Forest
Wilson Blvd and Kent Street Line: Route 17
Any suggestions as to where a slug line to 234 should be instated? Is there a market for this line or am I the only one...

fnk1481,
Do you commute between 234 and Rosslyn?
I like your Service Road idea but I wonder if there will be a lot of slugs to 234 there and I wonder if the area will be come over run...idk.
Thanks for replying,

A co-worker and I would like to slug from Roslyn to 234. Near the Metro station works for us. What times would be best?

| I also commute from 234 and Rosslyn, if anything develops in stone from this...please let me know as I am interested. I tried leaving Rosslyn yesterday with no luck of destination to 234 but got in another car going to Potomac Mills Mall. The wait for the right bus to get me where I was going, Georgetowne Village, was not so great. Don't wanna sound ungrateful but if we come together, there has got to be a better way for everyone :) |

I agree cbtdn01. I am letting people know in the morning when I ride into Rosslyn (which seems to be improving...) that they can slug back to 234 in the afternoon. I, too, have been trying to slug back to 234 and have done so now twice. It is great...if it works. We need to spread the word. I think the problem is that people are unaware. Here are my tactics:
-Spread the word in the Message Boards, outside of this topic -Let people in the cars in the morning know about the return route -Hold signs at both places letting people know that there is a new slug line in town! -Tell people at your work
Any other suggestions?
Guys, it's going to be hard at first but, we have to be persistent. Some people take longer to accept change. We have to start this line just like any other line got started. One day we'll have a permanent sign like the others on the service road...
Be optimistic; we're in this together. Yesterday, I waited and no cars came so I resorted to the Pentagon failproof. But their 234 line is way too long! Needless to say, I got home late.
Today--knowing that it's friday--IDK. I want to try the line but I'm not sure. It is time wasted if I don't get a ride but a lot of time and energy saved if I do...
I think if everyone who reads this post performs the above tactics we can and will see an improvement.
Now come pick me up, I'm leaving work ... NOW!

Have we given up on a slug line from Rosslyn to 234 commuter lot in the afternoon? The service road works for me. Has this worked for anyone lately?

neeciehill,
I have successfully slugged from Rosslyn to 234 a total of 4 times. When it happens it is great. However, like I said it is hit or miss. I know we are all on time crunch and want to get home fast but if we don't stick it out and wait a little longer then the slug line will never happen. I refuse to go to the Pentagon in this heat.
I am there (as a rider) at various times almost everyday. It's going to take dedicated drivers and riders to pull this thing off. I've not given up!
Make sure you are carrying a sign and are clearly visible to the drivers.
Every time I am out there though I never see anyone else anymore...
So far, I have rode:
with 2 male/female couples--one in a dark colored pick-up truck, 1 pair of blonde women, and a light-colored van.
Thus, I know there is a market for this we just have to persist. Give it 15-20 minutes--it takes that long to get to the Pentagon slug line--before you start thinking of an alternate way home.
Again, 90% of the time I am out there waiting for a ride anytime between 3:40 to 5:10 (I've different hours different days).
How does this sound?

| I too want to slug from Rosslyn to 234 or from State Dept to 234..I use the slug line in the morning and have been for two weeks and have been able to get a ride everyday. The problem that I see is the time. I am there between 6:50 and 7:05 and there are not too many people. I still think people go to the Pentagon line and not come to the Rosslyn line because there are not a lot of people. I truly believe that there is a need because it really is a hassle to slug from the Pentagon. It is so far to go from the metro or bus lines to the slug line. What are the best times to slug from Rosslyn to 234, because I don't get off from work in DC until 5pm but I am right at the Foggy Bottom metro. Are there people picking up around 5:15-5:30? |

I am all for starting a slug line from the Rosslyn slug line to the 234 lot. I too have started commuting from the 234 lot to get to work at Rosslyn. The more people we get involved the more it will be more visible. I have started by having my own sign when I get to the Rosslyn line that says 234 to Dumfries, I have been lucky to get rides back but a lot of people are still shy about doing this because of them getting stuck.

is the 234-rosslyn (and return) route getting any better? I'm looking at times around 0530-0545 and return around 1530 to 1600.
Thanks |

Hi jonb,
Both routes are improving daily in my opinion. The return route is still a bit rough. It is still in it's infancy but well worth the wait when it works. Waiting (in the shade) 15-20 minutes (max) at the Rosslyn slug line is way better than trekking to the Pentagon slug line (in this heat) on the metro ($$) and waiting in the heat.
As for the above times, you will have to try it. I have slugged between those times and caught a ride with two blonde women in a dark car. Make sure you are holding a sign and are visible to the cars.
Good Luck...

Well, I gave it a try to get back to 234 from Rosslyn last night, but no luck and ended up going to the Pentagon. Mornings are getting better. I need to travel to Woodbridge tonight, so I won't be trying again tonight. I talked with my ride in this morning so hopefully the strategy will work eventually. I'll be back at Rosslyn next week and keep trying. I'm usually there between 4:15p and 4:45p. Thanks.

Way to go mhutch218!
I do the same. I commend you for not giving up, telling your morning ride, and keeping us posted.
This morning I caught a ride from 234 around 7:00 AM (the latest I've tried) and the last two days I caught a ride from Rosslyn in the evenings. Yesterday we ended up picking up a third commuter heading to Horner Road and continued to 234 afterward. This was after waiting several minutes, around 3:45 PM.
Reminders: -Make sure you are holding your 234 signs high and with pride! -Spread the word -Let us know what times you try and how it's going for you -Don't lose heart!
